The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has enjoyed a financial boost from the
2024 AFL Gather Round weekend.
Spendmapp economic data for the month of April shows that the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, and in particular the suburb of Norwood, benefitted from an increase in spending this year compared to 2023.
The data revealed the total spend for the entire City over the three days was $17.6 million compared to $14.2 million in 2023.
Mayor Robert Bria said the weekend included two matches played at Norwood Oval on Friday 5th of April and Sunday 7th of April, as well as the Norwood Food & Wine Festival, which attracted 70,000 people.
“City-wide spend in the Dining and Hospitality category was $6.6 million this year compared to $4.45 million in 2023, which is a phenomenal result.”
“This included almost $1.1 million more spent on the Sunday compared to the Sunday in April 2023.
“Of the $6.6 million spent, $5.7 million was visitor spend, which is residents and businesses from outside of the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters,” he said.
Dining and Hospitality spending in the suburb of Norwood reached $3.7 million compared to $2.2 million in 2023. Of this figure, 88% was spent by visitors outside of the suburb of Norwood.
Almost half of the weekend’s spend ($1.8 million) was on the Sunday, compared to just under $800,000 spent on the Sunday of last year’s Gather Round.“The massive increase in spending this year is testament to the momentum of the Gather Round and of course, the popularity of the Norwood Food & Wine Festival.”
“The high percentage of spending coming from visitors (rather than locals) which reinforces the success of the Gather Round attracting people from interstate to Norwood.”
“In fact almost one quarter ($890,000) of the spend in Norwood came from Victorian visitors, which is a great result and demonstrates the popularity of the Norwood Food & Wine Festival.”
Mayor Bria said the Council has resolved to express its interest with the AFL and the State Government for Norwood Oval to host matches for the 2025 Gather Round and has allocated $200,000 in its 2024-2025 budget for activations and events.
