Creative retail hub given new lease on life in the heart of Norwood

10/03/2016

Bringing maker to the market, Brick + Mortar will continue to call Norwood home after having its lease agreement extended with the Council for a further two years.

A recipient of the Council’s ‘Thinking Through the City’ program, Brick + Mortar is a unique retail hub enabling creative entrepreneurs to gain experience in retail, while providing an inspiring environment for makers, customers and the broader community to connect.

Since opening its doors in April 2015, the community driven business has hosted over 60 workshops, 20 visual arts exhibitions and attracted 44 artist residencies across a range of disciplines including illustration, millinery, photography, jewellery and textile design.

Mayor Robert Bria said the Council is committed to fostering creative communities and stimulating economic growth, by enabling creative businesses to trial their ideas in a low risk environment, while also increasing foot traffic to otherwise underutilized city spaces.

“In 2014, the Council committed to supporting the incubation of Brick+Mortar by leasing its premises at a reduced rate for the first twelve months of the businesses tenancy. Since this time, Brick + Mortar has proven to be a local business success story, providing an invaluable platform for creative business in Adelaide to gain invaluable experience in retail while taking a place making approach to attract people to Norwood as a culturally rich and vibrant destination,” he said.

Offering individual pop-up stores co-located with a café, artist studios, events space and children’s creative play area, Brick + Mortar is open from Monday- Saturday between 9-5 pm at 49 George Street, Norwood.
